The southern coast and mid-coast of Maine offer some of the most magnificent scenery in all of New England. And in September, the natural light along the Atlantic Coast can be downright captivating, sometimes amplified by a thin blanket of fog that adds a touch of mystery to the scene. This region is teeming with scenic harbors, quaint fishing villages, iconic lighthouses, sandy beaches, and a rocky coastline that rivals all others lining the Atlantic Seaboard.

Join Ben Williamson and Mike Blanchette on a 6-night photo exploration of the best of the Maine Coast, as we photograph the coastline between Portland and Camden. This is Ben’s home and Mike has been coming here for many years, so your leaders will be sure to take you to the most photogenic locations on the coast. In addition, Ben’s work has already earned him recognition as a pre-eminent Maine photographer and photo editor, so you’ll be in good hands as we photograph the coast, traveling north toward the village of Camden.

In addition to photographing on the mainland, we'll also take a scenic cruise to Monhegan Island, where we'll spend much of the day exploring the quaint island before returning to the mainland.

And our photography is not limited to the familiar “golden hour” shooting times (the hours around sunrise and sunset). We'll also immerse ourselves in star photography on nights that are clear. The moon will be setting early in the evening over the course of the workshop, so we hope to capture the Milky Way, weather permitting. The date of this workshop was specifically chosen to increase our chances of capturing the starry night and Milky Way on moonless nights.

The workshop is limited to eight (8) participants to ensure an optimum instructor-to-participant ratio and provide a top-notch intimate experience for all participants. We have no set minimum number of participants, so we can guarantee that the workshop will run regardless of group size.

Our primary goal is to put the group in beautiful locations at optimal times, and offer our thoughts on how to make stunning landscape photographs. While in the field, Ben and Mike will be at your disposal for any assistance you may require. We'll also be holding informal training sessions on topics of interest during the bright midday hours and in times of inclement weather.

The daily itinerary is affected by weather, so your workshop leaders will evaluate the options on a day-by-day basis in order to make the best of the overall conditions. This flexibility increases our chances of being at the right place at the right time. We will photograph the coastline, harbors, lighthouses, villages, and little coves that may include:

  • 📷 Monhegan Island
  • 📷 Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth
  • 📷 Perkins Cove in Ogunquit
  • 📷 Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg

As we travel up the Maine coast, we'll be staying in two places to be close to our photo hotspots. We'll spend the first four nights at the Comfort Inn in Brunswick, and the last two nights at the Strawberry Hill Seaside Inn on the coast in Rockport.

Participants are responsible for the cost of lodging, although we reserve a block of rooms well in advance for your convenience. All rooms are single-occupancy unless you request otherwise.

IMPORTANT: Although we reserve a block of rooms on behalf of the group, you'll still need to call both the Comfort Inn and the Strawberry Hill Seaside Inn to register and pay a one-night deposit. You can reach the Comfort Inn at 207-729-112 and the Strawberry Hill Seaside Inn at 207-236-2725. Our confirmation email will include room rates (including group discounts) and further instructions regarding registration.

Getting There

You have a choice of several major airports to reach Brunswick, involving a range of driving distances. Plan on at least a 2-hour drive if you start from Boston (MA) or Manchester (NH), whereas, the Portland International Jetport is about 40 minutes from Brunswick.

Our gathering place on Sunday September 22 will be at the Comfort Inn in Brunswick at 4pm. We'll spend an hour on brief introductions and set expectations for the week. Then, we’ll go out to dinner as a group. Our photographic journey begins with a sunrise shoot the next morning.

We’ll be working our way north along the coast over the course of the week, concluding the workshop after sunrise and breakfast on the morning of Saturday September 28.

These photos show places we may visit during the workshop and demonstrate the types of images you could make.
